Is Online Slot Gambling Legal in Your State?

While online sports betting has moved at a breakneck pace across the United States, legalizing online casino games has been much slower. However, that does not mean that all states have remained staunchly opposed to the idea of allowing players to wager on slot machines and other table games from home. In fact, some states remain quite restrictive when it comes to gambling and have not yet enacted legislation that would allow for iGaming.

One such state is Hawaii, where residents are not allowed to place any type of wagers online or in person at a casino. The Aloha State has some of the strictest laws in the country regarding gambling and it may be a while before online casinos become available there.

Another state that hasn’t rolled out iGaming is New York. The Empire State has multiple casinos and racetracks located throughout the state, but it will be a while before New Yorkers have access to iGaming options. Multiple efforts have been made in recent years to get the state to open up to iGaming, but no progress has been made as of late.

Delaware was a leader in the online casino space, introducing iGaming back in 2013. The first year of legalized iGaming in the state saw three online options for players to wager on, with each of the state’s brick-and-mortar casinos getting a skin each and sharing player pools. This set the stage for iGaming in other nearby states, with Pennsylvania following suit in 2023 and Rhode Island doing so in 2024.

In 2021, West Virginia legalized online casino gaming. While only five of the state’s brick-and-mortar properties are eligible to host a casino online, each can offer up to three skins to its customers. In addition, the state is working on a framework to eventually allow for additional operator partners. Some of the country’s best names like DraftKings, FanDuel, and Caesars are ready to launch in the Mountain State.

Vermont recently passed a law to legalize sports betting, but that didn’t include online casinos. The Green Mountain State isn’t expected to move forward with iGaming until the sports betting framework becomes more established there.

In the meantime, the state has a few tribal casinos for residents to visit. While some have tried to pass a bill that would allow for the development of online casinos, nothing has been able to get traction in 2022 and it may be some time before the state considers iGaming in the future.
