Rufus 3.4 is currently the latest version, choose the right options according to your needs:

1. UEFI only:
– Partition scheme: GPT
– Target system: UEFI (non CSM)
– File system: FAT32

2. Legacy BIOS only:
– Partition scheme: MBR
– Target system: BIOS (or UEFI-CSM)
– File system: NTFS

3. Dual UEFI + Legacy BIOS:
– Press “Alt + E”. By default, Rufus will not support booting in both UEFI and Legacy (BIOS). Press ALT + E to enable this option. Rufus also supports creating two NTFS partitions to store files larger than 4GB and FAT32 to boot UEFI.
– Partition scheme: MBR
– Target system: BIOS or UEFI
– File system: FAT32
If the ISO file contains files larger than 4GB, choose NTFS.

If you get this error message, it means that the ISO file contains a file larger than 4GB. In this case, choose NTFS instead of FAT32, Rufus will create a second FAT32 partition to support UEFI boot.

This ISO image contains a file larger than 4GB, which is more than the maximum size allowed for a FAT or FAT32 file system.

In general, choose GPT if you only need UEFI support. Selecting MBR and FAT32 will support both UEFI and Legacy. Select NTFS if the program errors as above.

  1. I've created a legacy boot usb using this methodology but my motherboard doesn't seem to be able to boot from the usb when I choose the UDB-HDD option in the boot menu. It just reverts back to it's normal boot sequence. My mother board is a gigabyte ga-770ta-ud3. I've created ubuntu boot usb's and booting from those is no problem. If you have any suggestions about how to solve this it would be greatly appreciated.

  2. What is wrong with you nerds! You are supposed to narrate the video!

  4. hey man i need to instal windows 10 32 bits in a laptop schneider scl141ctp that have a windows 10 64 bits installed..i did made a windows 10 32 bits bootable usb with microsoft tool and Rufus(tried both) but i don't know why schneider scl141ctp don't boot windows instalation from that usb but when i creat a bootable USb with windows 10 64 bits then the laptop can boot windows installation without problems…can you help? thanks in advance

  5. It worked with Alt+E, but I don't understand why the developer of Rufus made it that way. Why did he hide legacy mode? Some laptops don't support uefi so it should be the best to let the user select what mode he wants to install windows, and not hide this feature behind an alt+e command.

  6. Wonderfull video, solved my issue trying to install Win 10 via Rufus with USB; just needed to pick MBR. Huh!

  7. i have followed all the methods listed here to try and get the bios to boot from USB. It does not work at all. the bios simply states no bootable disk available and to press any key to continue. m trying to boot using the MBR settings to install a fresh new Windows 10.
