Can You Gamble Online Legally in All States?

The internet has transformed the gambling industry, allowing players to place wagers from the comfort of their own homes. However, many people are unsure whether online gambling is legal in their state. Here, we’ll take a look at each state’s laws and let you know whether it is or not.

Can You Gamble Online Legally in All States?

Each state determines what types of gambling it allows within its borders, where the gambling can take place, and who may gamble. Moreover, each state has different minimum gambling ages. In some cases, this age limit is the same for all forms of gambling while in others, it depends on the type of activity. For example, in New Jersey, players must be 21 to enter a casino while in Oregon, the minimum age is 18. The laws of other states also differ. For example, some states make it illegal to operate a gambling establishment without a license while others don’t.

In the United States, the vast majority of states have made it legal to gamble online, and most of them allow both sports betting and casino games. These changes took place after the Justice Department issued a memo in 2011 reinterpreting the Wire Act to only apply to sports betting. The decision opened the door for a large number of states to offer these services.

Online gaming has taken off since then, and more states continue to introduce their own offerings. The latest to join the ranks of iGaming states are Michigan and West Virginia, both of which launched their offerings in 2019. West Virginia is home to nine online casinos, including some big-name operators like DraftKings and FanDuel Casino.

Pennsylvania is another iGaming powerhouse. The state legalized online casino gaming in October of 2017, but it took over 18 months to launch the first sites. Now, more than 10 safe and licensed iGaming sites are available to PA residents, and they’re partnering with some of the country’s most well-known brick-and-mortar operators.

Connecticut has just one iGaming option, and it’s overseen by the state lottery. Despite this, it’s still a great choice for those who want to play online casino games.

While New York and California are working on legislation to legalize iGaming, neither has passed a bill as of yet. However, they could eventually become the next big iGaming markets in the US.

The state of Utah is another notable exception to the national trend toward legalized gambling. While it’s illegal to run an unlicensed gambling operation, the state does have a handful of land-based casinos and accepts gambling bets via phone, fax, and email. In addition, the state offers a mobile app for its residents to place bets from their phones. This is a very convenient way to enjoy the thrills of gambling from anywhere at any time. This makes Utah a very unique and interesting case when it comes to gambling.
